Making Indian Presence felt in the Pacific Islands Mr. Modi Announces $75 Million Credit Line to Fiji

Concluding his 10 day tour Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, addressed the special session of the Fiji Parliament and left for India. The tour is being looked at as an exercise to build stronger ties with nations which can be strategic partners in the Indian growth story.

Shri Narendra Modi arrived in Fiji, at the crack of dawn and was greeted by his Fijian counterpart Mr. Bainimarama, at the Nausori International Airport in Fiji. this is the third and final leg of Mr. Modi's 10 day long trip.

Mr. Modi, was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at the airport before he went on to attend a traditional welcome ceremony at Albert's Park, near the Fijian Parliament. This is a first visit by any Indian Prime Minister to Fiji, in 33 years and it coincides with Mrs. Indira Gandhi's Birth Day, who visited Fiji in 1981.

Mr. Modi, expressed his intent to help Fiji, to make it "Digital Fiji", the Prime Minister announced, Visa on arrival for tourists from Fiji. This came along with announcements of a $75 Million, credit line to Fiji. Pacts were also signed to increase Security and Military co-operation between the two countries. Discussion regarding co-generation of power and up-gradation of Sugar industry in Fiji were also held, India has announced a fund of US$5 million, towards betterment of villages in the island nation.

Mr. Modi, went on to call Fiji as a strong voice in the region and also amongst the developing world. India has offered assistance to Fiji, in the field of defence training and other aspects, to better equip the island nation.

Mr. Bainimarama, also congratulated India on the Mars Mission, and went on to say that they are looking for to Indian support and co-operation for the development of Fiji in future. He also invited the Indian film industry to come forward and shoot Bollywood movies in the region. He also added that Fiji is looking forward to increasing co-operation in the field of renewable energy.

Is it Congress or Rahul Gandhi, who is feeling left out ??

The house proceedings are being disturbed on a regular basis by the Congress Party for the past few days, the overall scenario seems to be of attention grabbing tactics rather than fruitful debate. Finally in a bid to showcase his presence and authority Rahul Gandhi disrupted the working of the house by charging towards the speaker by assembling in the well of the house a few days back.



Later Rahul Gandhi told reports outside the parliament that, "We are not being allowed to speak in the parliament, we are asking for discussion. The mentality is that discussion is not acceptable; everybody feels it, their party feels it, we feel it everybody feels it"

In continuation to the above point Mr. Jaitley on wednesday said, "It is a time for the Congress party to introspect itself........  If you want to show yourself as doing something, it will be better if you lead your own party, rather than develop a contrived aggression against the functioning of the house itself, which otherwise has been functioning well" he went on to say that Congress seems to be facing a coup within their own party, as day after day established leaders of the party are speaking out.

Is Rahul Gandhi feeling left out in the dearth of genuine topics of discussion, or is it the mounting pressure of bringing Priyanka Gandhi to the forefront of congress starting to threaten him. Their seems to be an identity crisis within the party, every leader including Mr. Gandhi seems to be involved in the fight of grabbing attention and come the forefront, some are trying to be the face of the party themselves, while others seem to back behind the Gandhi Wagon by putting forward name of Mrs. Priyanka Gandhi Vadhera, as the future leader of the party.

As a part of the above agenda it seems Mr. Gandhi has realised that he needs to be more active in the house, and was observed to be more involved in the proceedings of the house just a day after creating a ruckus by storming the well of the house with a group of other members from congress. The NDA Budget, What will Mr. Jaitely bring to the table....

Mr. Arun Jaitley, Cabinet Minister for Finance seems to be working full time preparing for the budget that is to be presented in the first few weeks of July, the interim budget that was put in place by the previous government will be in effect till the 31st of July, 2014.

A lot has been said and done till now, but the fact of the matter remains is that the highest tax paying segment in the country is that of the urban middle class, invariably they are the same people who are facing troubles because of high inflation and ever rising cost of essential commodities. The SME sector has also been going through a tough phase and needs support to compete with imports coming to India at a cheaper rate. The industrial growth in India has also been limited due to various factors.

A lot is required to be done and what all should be on priority, Mr. Jaitley seems to be trying to find out ways and methods to balance everything, before the same is presented in the parliament, as everyone is eyeing the budget, specially the opposition and they will not spare any opportunity to take a dig on the new regime, which came with a promise of "Acche Din Aane Waale Hai", Good days are about to come. Things like Railway fare hike and power shortage in Delhi have already given ample opportunity to the opposition to make noise about the new regime.

The common man is looking at the budget wide eyed and is of the belief that things will turn around in a day, but that is not possible. Mr. Modi, the honourable Prime Minister of India has already talked about the bitter pill approach to make things right a few days back, if that is to be taken as an indication it seems that there wouldn't be many relaxations in the budget as far as taxation related issues of the common man are concerned. We might see some sort of a rationalisation in terms of tax brackets and easier rules in terms of tax exemptions for the common man. The budget should be inclusive for all and the urban middle class should be considered during the policy making process, as they are stuck in a situation where they have to maintain a certain standard of living and at the same time manage costs of living.

The industry is also looking forward to the budget, but with a caution no one is sure as to what bitter pill is about to come their way. The automotive sector which got the benefit of excise cut, is hopeful that the same remains intact and they are not required to increase the prices.

The industry at large is hoping to get a bouquet of incentives for setting up new units in the form of tax free or tax benefit zones like the ones set-up by the previous NDA regime in Himachal PradeshThe etc., but what one needs to understand is that such schemes are not a permanent solution for development. Let's look at industrial growth in Himachal Pradesh, more than 5000 manufacturing units came up in Baddi industrial area all of a sudden, which resulted in man power crisis and sudden price rise for land. The main purpose for most industries established in such regions,  was just to take advantage of the 10 year tax relief. Most of the units have already stopped working or are in the process of shutting down shop as the cost benefit that brought them there does not exist any more. The government can look at providing a blanket tax benefit to industrialist on setting up new units across the country barring a few Industrial hubs, which already have high penetration. this would not only ensure better spread but also not result in worker shortage as is the case in Himachal Pradesh.

The SME sector has been hit hard by cheap imports, specially from China, the government needs to look into the same with urgency. Although the government has announced certain zones for electronic related industries but these industries require support to fight against cheap imports. A lot of small scale units which were operational till about 15 years a go have shut down shop due to severe competition from Chinese imports, these industries could have been saved if appropriate taxes and standards are imposed on imported goods. At one end you expect in-house industry to pay excise and other taxes, but you allow importers to import goods duty free, this results in severe pricing pressures and make industry at home unviable.

The government also needs to make sure that rules are not brought about with retrospective effect, this causes worry in foreign investors, as they are not sure whether the investment made today is going to remain the same going forward or not. There is also a need to safe-guard the rights of small businessmen against multinational giants, the FDI in retail sector although a good move, one needs to make sure that these vendors are monitored strictly for compliance on a regular basis. For example when you call a business cash & carry it should be strictly that, the case as of now is that it is killing the small vendor as anyone can venture into such stores and buy items. There are also many issues pertaining to input VAT and that small distributors are facing which these giants are able to sideline.

The Real Story Behind the Hike in Rail Fares....

The incumbent BJP led government has been under fire since the announcement of the Rail Fare hike, and why not the railways are the life lines of India. commodity prices are directly linked to railway freight rates. But is this a decision by NDA or is it a price being paid for policy paralysis that had gripped the nation for most part of the last decade, in which Mr. Manmohan Singh decided to remain tight lipped and rule the nation.

As per reports on Times Now, television news channel, the actual rail fare hike had been suggested back in February, but since the then Prime Minister Mr. Singh was concern more about the upcoming elections, the decision was pushed forward to be implemented from May. The overall loss that Indian Railways has faced due to this election related reason is more than Nine Hundred Crore Rupees, with daily losses amounting to around thirty Crore Rupees per day.

The Indian railways is already under tremendous pressure due to huge subsidies (amounting to around Rs. 26,000 Crore per annum) on pricing as Railways Pricing directly effects the public in general and most of the Railways Ministers have decided to hold back the fare hikes and have resulted in paralysing the expansion and up-gradation plans of Indian Railways. There are many projects which are lying on the back burner for decades due to non-availability of funds. We all know what happens to a system which is not upgraded it can keep on rolling due to the inert momentum for a long while disguising the effects of breakdowns and low maintenance but the day of complete annihilation can come any-time.

The opposition is shouting foul on the price hike, but what one needs to look into is why such a steep increase is required, the increased fares will bring in around Six Thousand Crores of additional income every year, it will still leave a lot of subsidy burden on the Railways. But this additional fund would also be utilised for up-gradation of railways infrastructure, which inturn will result in better services and faster trains that will help people in general.

NDA, goes behind the scenes asks 6 Governors to resign....

In a move that can lead to escalation in tension at the centre, the NDA led central government has asked six UPA appointed governors to vacate their positions. The action is happening behind the scenes right now and seems to be something very similar to what UPA did when it came to power in 2004 and moved on for removal of appointees in the Raj Bhavan, done by the NDA government then.

If sources in the government are to be believed, NDA regime is not going after governors who are nearing the end of their term, but the following governors have been suggested by the Union Home Secretary to put down their papers, through telephonic calls:

• M K Narayanan, West Bengal
• Sheila Dixit, Kerela
• Margaret Alva, Rajasthan
• Kamla Beniwal, Gujarat
• K Sankaranarayanan, Maharashtra
• Devendra Konwar, Tripura

The actions that seem to be a replications of deeds done by the UPA in 2004, are bound for the courtroom, as the NDA back in 2004 had also done the same and the court had ordered in 2010 that government can not remove Governors just on the basis of loss of confidence, since they are not employees of the union government.

Modi seems to be stuck on Hindi...

As per sources in the foreign office, Mr. Modi has decided to use Hindi as the language of communication from his side. This has called for the use of an interpreter, in all the talks. Although Mr. Modi is pretty conversant in English, he has chosen to use the services of the interpreter in all his meeting, apart from the leaders who were able to speak in Urdu/Hindi.

It seems that Mr. Modi is poised to bring the glory of Hindi, that it truly deserves. Mr. Modi is not the first person to use Hindi as the official language of conversation, even in the past leaders from our country have used Hindi whenever  the language of communication from the other side has not been English or Hindi.

Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, also made it a point to use Hindi as the language of communication at all the international forums. In the past a lot of leaders have used Hindi, but have always resorted to the use of English during Bi-lateral talks.

Mr. Modi, would the first Prime Minister of India to use Hindi at all forums. The practice would not be unique to Indian PM, most of the international leaders prefer to use their mother tongue at all times during conversation and use the services of an interpreter.

The unmanageable Uttar Pradesh...!!! Fact or Fiction

A lot has been said about conditions in Uttar Pradesh, I have not been to ground zero but based on media reports I have come to believe the conditions are not very good. How can they be, when the leader of the ruling party makes statements like, "Galtiyan toh Ladke hi karte hai" ("Mistakes are committed by boys only"); on being questioned about rising cases of rapes in the state.

The CM makes a statement that one needs to google (search the internet), to find out that Uttar Pradesh is not the only state where there is a serious problem of atrocities against women; does incidents in other states give right to the UP government to turn a blind eye towards such incidents. It surely seems that, UP ministers do not want to take action, as one of the senior leaders went on record saying that, " Cases of rape are natural in a big state like UP."; One of the senior SP leaders went on to say that when a relationship between a biy and girl comes out in open it is being termed as rape...!!!

What do these people think, that if you have a big state you should stop taking action, is the system so paralysed that it does not feel the pain of the victims. It does seem that it is immune to criticism, the CM ordered use of water cannons on the female wing of the Bhrtiya Janta Party, which was marching towards the CM house a few days back in Lucknow

The cases are aplenty, but the stir has started after the rape and subsequent murder of two minor girls aged 14 and 15 in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. The were abducted and gangraped, later their bodies were found hanging on a tree, the incident took place on the 27th of May, 2014.

The case is not an isolated incidence, there have been several cases in the past as well, the case was followed by an incident of attempted rape of a civil court judge, in the highly secure judges colony. Even Amethi the strong hold of INC, and constituency of Mr. Rahul Gandhi, is not safe and a case of minor rape has been reported recently.

On being questioned by the media about the occurrences of such cases, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said, "You do your Job, I will do mine"; I would like to ask Mr. Singh, if you had been doing your job properly the questions would never have been raised.

What is the government doing in UP, they want to make the state a high tech state by distribution of laptops and other such flimsy things. The overall situation in the state seems to be out of hand of the ruling party, but as they have seen the results of the national elections, the overall scenario for Samajvadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party are not all that great and thus they would not want a re-election soon.

The Arvind Kejriwal Saga, write-up and Cartoons...

It all started with Arvind Kejriwal, becoming the poster boy of anti corruption movement in India. A simple looking muffler clad ex-civil servant from the Indian revenue services, who had won a lot of recognition across.

A look into his work in the past would enlighten you about how well he has been able to bring up a lot of good projects only to leave them once the spotlight has moved else where. He has worked really hard to ensure his presence in the limelight, so much so that he has left a lot of work incomplete in the process. An IIT graduate, Kejriwal had shown a lot of potential to be the next big thing and for many the only big thing in Indian Politics.

His entry into Indian politics was very well timed the incumbent government at the centre and in Delhi was under a lot of pressure due to anti-incumbency wave and people were looking for a change, a big change!!! In comes Mr. Kejriwal, along with Anna Hazare to start India Against Corruption. A lot of people don't know that Anna was not Kejriwal's first choice ever, the first choice for him was Shri Shri Ravi Shankar. A lot of thought and planning was behind the choice, they wanted someone with whom media can relate to easily.

The movement started and became a big success with major support coming from youth, the youth which would become the main factor in the upcoming Delhi elections. Most of them were first time voters who were always connected through the spread of social media. A lot of drama surrounded the movement, at its peak Ram Leela maidan had an attendance of more than 10,000 people. The media was also hungry for news as the IPL was already over and there was nothing major happening for the 24 x 7 media.

All of sudden things got sore between Anna and Kejriwal, so much so that the difference of opinion led to the formation of AAP the A am Aadmi Party. Kejriwal who once sworn on his kids never to enter political arena, became a politician. People who were looking for change saw a ray of hope in him and started following him, media also understood that TRPs are going to be driven by AAP, and they joined in as well.

A lot was said by AAP leaders and everyone believed in them, they connected very well with the youth and the urban poor. All this resulted in them getting sometimes vocal and sometimes muted support from across the spectrum. Delhi elections happened and AAP became the second largest party after BJP, and believe it or not they formed the government with the support of Congress against whom they were spewing fire all along.

They came to power on the promise of cheap electricity, free water and a lot of promises which many believed unachievable. They did try to woo the public with things like 200lts. of free water and sparing people who had not paid electricity bills for long by calling them supporters of AAP movement.

They even tried conducting Jan Sabhas which was a disaster and gave up on it without even trying to improve the format. This was not going be the first thing AAP gave up, which we realized in the first 49 days of their government. He also broke the promises that he made regarding the use of government house, vehicles and so on...

They gave up on Delhi also as it seems Kejriwal had started eyeing the bigger office, one which will take him to 7RCR. They resigned and made a lot of noise on the governor not dissolving the  Delhi Vidhan Sabha, later we saw him requesting the Governor to give them another chance after failing miserably in the national elections.

A lot of hopes that people had shattered, people started seeing Kejriwal as a bhagoda (someone who runs away from responsibility), but there was a sizeable chunk who still believed in him. A lot of things happened behind the curtain, many of the founding members left the party and came in the open about the problems because of which they left. Initially people kept on believing Kejriwal, but over a period of time people started parting way, what Mr. Kejriwal saw as support nationally turned out to be opportunistic people eyeing just a ticket for the Vidhan Sabha elections, once the lust of candidates came out many AAP supporters moved out questioning the selection of candidates.

In many cases we would further see that the number of votes received by AAP was less than the number of registered members in that area. AAP leaders failed to realise that like on Facebook don't always translate into votes. Many of the people who were behind AAP euphoria on-line did not even cast their vote, they were all only social media giants who made a lot of voice but when it came to real work they were no where to be seen.

AAP lost across the board with more than 90% of it's candidates not even able to save their deposits, this has shown that people are not fools and if they believe in something they want results to substantiate their belief. Mr. Kejriwal seems to be trying again to come in the limelight by going to jail and other such affairs...

AAP did a lot of good but that good has all turned into evil it seems, because what they have finally achieved is that they have made sure that people will not believe in a new person or concept in politics without substantial proof of work....

Narendra Modi's 10 Point agenda for the Cabinet

 

Four days in and the new government in Delhi has already started working overtime. Media has already covered news about, strict office timing mandates being driven by Mr. Modi. Yesterday Mr. Modi met with his cabinet to set in place the core guidlelines for the functioning of the government.

Narendra Modi realises the importance of empowering the bureaucracy and thus the first point on the list is about building confidence of the civil servants. Bureaucrats due to issues like lack of confidence and excessive interference, are vary of taking tough decisions; which has resulted in paralysing the system.

The other agenda on the list is about infrastructure, and it is the most important aspect as it directly co-relates to growth of the nation. Just like a corporate organisation, Mr. Modi has also directed all the ministers to work hand in hand and solve inter ministry issues. The economy is also in need of a major boost.

The Black Money Trail, Governments Attempt to trace it...

The government of India today announced setting up of a Special Investigation Team, to look into the trail of Black Money that is parked outside India. The Supreme Court, had asked the government to setup a SIT invetigate into the Black Money, based on the writ petition filed by the former Law Minister and senior advocate Ram Jethmalani in July, 2011.

The government has setup a  high profile SIT team is being headed by retired Supreme Court Judge M.B. Shah, and Arijit Pasayat as vice-chairman. The other members of the team include Secretary revenue, deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India, director of the Intelligence Bureau, director of the Enforcement Directorate, director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes and director of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

Based on the graphic below that has been circulated widely on the internet as being published by Wikileaks (as per internet sources), the total money stashed in the Swiss bank accounts only for the selected few accounts amounts to a whopping 313.45 billion dollars, if we peg the Indian Rupee at Rs. 50 per Dollar.



If we are able to bring back even a part of this money back, it would do wonders for the Indian economy, the current dollar reserves of India stand at $287.18 billion. The government if is able to trace the source and provide a route to bring it back it would mean a lot for the development of India. As per our understanding, the following routes can be used to bring this money back:

1. Ask the Swiss Government to hand over the money to Indian Government: This route seems to be impossible as Swiss banks have got very stringent security and privacy policies.

2. Create a scheme to offer the offenders to pay a tax amount and retain the remaining money as white money, this will not only help the system in terms of extra tax revenue. The money converted as white money would be invested back in the markets either in the form of industries or share markets, which will inturn result in better liquidity and help the country grow.

The overall scenario in terms of the black money is very vague and we need to look at how the SIT and the government goes about it.

New Ministers Take Charge; What is Next on the Agenda!!!

The power equations have changed in the heart if India. The new governments has come with a lot of promises that needs to be fulfilled, the overall agenda that needs to be taken care of is much larger than one can imagine. The only worry that we should have is of over expectations, systems are tough to change and overhaul when we talk of the largest democracy in the world.

The new government is being headed by Shri Narendra Modi, a lot has been said before the elections and Mr. Modi had picked up issues that others had avoided in the past for his campaign. The people have also responded and given him a clear mandate; while discussing with a few people involved in political circles, I have heard people saying that if Bhartiya Janta Party would have fielded more candidates it would have easily crossed the 300 mark, but now all that is a thing of past, what we need to look at is what next??

Everything said and done PM has taken oath of office, in a grand celebration of Democracy which was attended by all the neighboring country heads. The grand affair at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, was followed up next day by ministers taking charge of their respective offices and the Prime Minister met with all the country heads right from Hamid Karzai to Nawaz Sharif.

Although BJP has got majority on it's own, but still it's allies seem to be unhappy with whatever they have got, one of it's oldest allies Shiv Sena, seems to be unhappy with what they have got (Heavy Industries Ministry), Anant Geete with minister in question did not take office on the day and the matter came out in the open, it seems that BJP has assured them of more and the minister took charge of office today.

September, 17th 1950: Birth of a legend:

Narendra Modi is born in Vadnagar a small settlement around 100Kms from Gujarat, in a not very well to do family.

Mid 1950's  to 1960's: Years of his youth:

Spends his youth studying in Vadnagar and Ahmedbad, also works as tea seller at a small canteen during the duration to make ends meet.

Although already active in RSS, marries Jashodaben under pressure from the family, but leaves her and starts living in RS headquarter in Maninagar, Ahmedabad.

1987: Enters BJP:

BJP wins the civic body polls, Modi joins BJP and is made the General secretary of the Gujarat unit.

1990: The Rath Yatra:

Becomes a close aid of Shri Lal Krishna Advani, and plays a big role in the Somnath - Ayodhya Rath Yatra.

1995 - 1998: The Gujarat BJP split and regain of power:

Shankersingh Vaghela rebels and splits BJP six months after wining Gujarat polls in 1995, BJP regains power in 1998 polls and Modi is made the Oraganising Secretary.

USA denies Visa to Modi, for spreadin unrest in the state on communal grounds.

List of Ministers is out But Ministries still unknown

A per news reports doing rounds the following candidates are going to be sworn in today as ministers, as per comments that have come from associated parties Shiv Sena MP has stated that more alliance ministers would be given a cabinet birth once the the same is expanded a month from now.

There has been a lot of movement of senior BJP MP's, since Mr. Modi returned to Gujarat Bhavan after visiting Rajghat and meeting Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The overall list as below encompasses all senior leaders of the BJP but is missing out Shri Lal Krishna Advani, this seems to be an indication that Mr. Advani would be the speaker of the house.

Foreign Affairs!! Where are we headed??

India needs to take a stand of what all is happening in it's neighbourhood, but what is the right way of doing the same. In a first of its kind invitation Shri Narendra Modi, the PM designate had extended an invitation for the swearing in ceremony to be held on the 26th of May, 2014, to all the SAARC nation leaders.

Yesterday the Pakistani PM Mr. Nawaz Sharif had accepted the invitation and Bangladesh is being represented by the Speaker of the House Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhary. In a first of its kind invitation it seems Mr. Modi is looking forward to creating stronger ties with all the neighbouring countries right from day one. What needs to analysed is that due to certain decisions taken by the previous government, Indian ties with neighbouring countries have weakened.

A countries foreign policy needs to take in consideration various factors, while deciding on its course of action pertaining to the countries that surround it. There is a lot of action that is taking place in South East Asia lately and China has been trying hard to isolate India, thus our foreign policy needs to focus on our neighbours in order to maintain cordial relationships on every front; it is important for India not  only to focus on its internal strengthening but also its surroundings, as it will not only help India grow in terms of business but also a world power.

In a recent run of events a group of Tamil students started protesting against the invitation sent to to the Sri Lanka, President Mr. Rajapaksa, what these small groups are missing out on is that, India can only influence Sri Lanka, to have a better approach towards Tamil Residents, if they have cordial relationships. To further the Tamil cause in Sri Lanka, Indian government needs to create stronger ties with them in order to demand better conditions. As per reports by PTI, Sri Lanka has released a group of Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture ahead of Mr. Modi's swearing in ceremony, this should be considered as sign of good thing in future.

Over all what we all need to see is what does Mr. Modi do in terms of foreign policy after taking the hot seat, as in the past decade India seems to have lost a lot of ground on that front.

Indian Consulate in Afghanistan Attacked

The Indian Consulate in the city of Herat, Afghanistan was attacked by four gunmen on Friday, as per the latest all the four gunmen have been shot down. In a combined effort by the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) and Afghan Police. As per sources one gunmen was shot down by the ITBP and two other by Afghan Police. No staff has been injured in the attack as per reports.

The attack has been strongly condemn by our designate Prime-Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he called upon the Ambassador and assured them of complete support and also boasted their morale. he also called upon President Karzai, who has assured complete support.
