In a move that should have been welcomed across the board, there seems to be a problem, one Mr. Karunanidhi whose party supported the UPA, has stated that the central government is trying to "Imposition of Hindi".
The statement by Mr. Karunanidhi, comes in wake of a circular by Home Ministry which has asked all departments handling Social media accounts, of different government companies and departments to give prominence to Hindi in social media for any official communication.
As per Article 343. of the Indian Constitution, Hindi in Devnagari Lipi should have taken over as the official language for India, but no one seems to be complaining about the same. If we look around the world we will find that even the third world nations give prominence to their mother tongue over English. But India seems not to be concern, about the place that it's official language should get.
Countries like Korea, Japan, China and so on, have made sure that their official language gets prominence over any other language, and thus we see that even USA based software/hardware developers have to make sure that all their systems are compatible with these languages, but India Which is home to more than 1/6th population of the world has ignored its mother tongue for long now.
Mr. Karunanidhi, who spearheaded the anti-Hindi movement in south in 1960's, needs to understand that the regional divide of languages is given adequate attention across the country and no one, not even the central government has made it mandatory for any state to compulsorily use any particular language. But as a united nation we need to have our representation on the international forum and there we can not go ahead with multiple languages, English being a internationally recognised language can be fine, but we need to give Hindi our official language due importance. Use of official language for any form of communication, would lead to better integration and would help elevate Hindi as an international language.
Just on the sidelines while writing this article, I just recalled a few experiences in the land of Mr. Karunandihi, Kindly understand I do not wish to undermine anyone, but the anti-Hidni movement that he started in 1960's have resulted in creating a huge divide between Hindi Speaking and non-Hindi speaking population; the question that one need to ask, is this divide healthy in any way for India or does this show an internal tussle between different parts of the country.
There is a very old saying "United we stand, Divided we fall", it is high time that we move away from petty political concerns and show a united face to the world. The world needs to know what all India is capable of and not what all can be used to break it into fragments.
Jai Hind...
